What kind of study is offered at the University of Warsaw?

University of Warsaw offers study in both humanities and science, however, it doesn’t provide medical education or fine art studies. Most students study full-time and obtain degree (Bachelor, Master or PhD). However, short-term studies or research works are also possible.

Can I study in English at UW?

Yes, you can. There are numerous degree and non-degree programs and courses offered in English.

Where can I find information on courses and degree programs in foreign languages?

 

Information about full-time degree and non-degree programs, summer schools and e-learning may be found on Courses taught in foreign languages. In order to register to any of the above, please contact the faculty/unit concerned.

 

Courses/lectures in foreign languages at various units are available on http://www.ects.uw.edu.pl/  Registration to those courses should be made through IRO and for some of them on-line registration is required too – for more information please ask your program coordinator.

Is Polish language necessary to study at University of Warsaw?

 

Polish is the main, but not the only language of instruction at UW. Offer of programs and courses in foreign languages is becoming wider each year. Therefore you may find degree programs/ non-degree courses to study even if you don't speak Polish. However, most degree programs are offered in Polish only.

How can I learn Polish at the University of Warsaw?

 

There are several ways of learning Polish at UW.

First of all there are semester, trimester or summer courses offered by the Centre of Polish language and culture for Foreigners POLONICUM. Standard courses are free of charge for most Erasmus students, students holding a governmental scholarship, exchangees from partner universities within bilateral agreements - for further information and your eligibility please contact program coordinator at IRO.

Furthermore UW offers distance learning Internet Polish Language Course, for foreigners coming to Poland in a short time wishing to learn some Polish.

Another option of learning Polish is the language exchange i.e. Tandem. Program is coordinated by the Erasmus Student Network at UW, but is open for all foreign student at our University, if only they want to exchange their knowledge of the mother tongue with a Polish student. It's a kind of language exchange and is always free of charge.

What does short-term study or research mean?

Study or research is concerned short-term if it lasts up to one academic year. Definition includes short research work, summer course or study for one or two semesters only, without getting any degree.

How can I enrol for short-term study or research?

There are four main possibilities to enroll for short-term study or research at UW. It is possible for:

  1. Exchange students/researchers – within special bilateral agreement between University of Warsaw and student’s home institution

  2. Erasmus students

  3. Students/researchers granted with an outside scholarship (governmental, from foundations, etc.)

  4. Guest students/guest international students– on a payment basis

Depending on the above status there are different ways of enrollment – given below.

What kind of scholarships may I get?

 

There is a number of scholarships available for students and faculty members. These are:

  1. Erasmus scholarship

  2. Scholarship based on bilateral agreement (bilateral exchange)

  3. Governmental scholarship (based on agreements between Polish Ministry of Education and Science and foreign governments or foundations/institutes approved by the government)

  4. Individual scholarship of the self-chosen foundation/institute

  5. Scholarship of the home university

How can I become an Erasmus student?

Students who may be considering study at University of Warsaw as LLP Erasmus students are advised to contact their home university coordinator or International Relations Office/Erasmus Office to find out whether an Erasmus agreement has been concluded between the two universities and if so, whether the proposed program of studies shall be approved. A list of all UW partner  institutions is available on  Partner Institutions in the mobility of students and teachers.
Erasmus students selected by their home institutions to study at University of Warsaw will be asked to fill out the on-line application form. The students MUST  fill in the forms and submit them to University of Warsaw's International Relations Office no later than 30th May (for winter semester or the whole academic year) or 30th November (for summer semester). After that they will get an official invitation (Letter of Acceptance) and information materials.

How can I become an exchange student/exchange faculty member?

Students/Researchers who may be considering study/faculty members at University of Warsaw as exchangees are advised to contact their home university Faculty/Unit of employment or International Relations Office to find out whether a bilateral agreement has been concluded between the two units/universities and if so, whether the proposed program of study/research shall be approved. A list of all UW partner  institutions is available on  Partner Institutions in the mobility of students and teachers.

How can I become a governmental and other scholarship holder?

If you are interested in governmental scholarship please contact the Ministry of Education and Science (or its equivalent) in your home country. They will provide you with further information and upon your selection they will send us all the necessary papers. Therefore in that case there is no need to contact us directly with your application.

The situation looks different if you already have other (non-governmental) scholarship. In such case please provide us with the proof of such scholarship as well as your CV, cover letter and study/research plan. However, please note that holding a scholarship doesn’t certainly mean that you will be enrolled to University of Warsaw.

Apart from the above given Erasmus/bilateral/governmental etc. scholarships in general University of Warsaw does not grant individuals with any other scholarship.

Who is eligible to study at UW?

Eligibility requirements depend on the study you choose. For degree study requirements please look at point 2. For short-term study you have to be a student/researcher at a foreign institution/university. However, to become a guest free mover you have to hold at least a high-school diploma and be at least 18 years old.

How the guest student/international students program works?

Guest student (international students) program is tailored for foreigners who wish to study at University of Warsaw for one or two semesters only and they cannot arrive to the University within any agreement (LLP Erasmus, bilateral or governmental). If enrolled to UW they may attend selected courses at various university units, both in foreign languages and Polish, as well as Polish language course. After finishing their short-term study and passing exams guest students/international students receive Transcript of Records. There is no degree granted to those students.

How can I become a guest student/international student?

In order to become a guest student, a foreigner has to be a student abroad and undertake courses of at least 15ECTS/semester. Other applicants (international students taking less than 15ECTS/semester and non-student applicants) may become international students. University of Warsaw Electronic Student Card is given to guest students only.
Guest students/international students study at UW on a payment basis: 35 EUR / 1 ECTS. Foreigners with proved Polish origins are entitled to 30% discount.
Foreigners interested in the program should send us the Guest student application form (signed by their home institution, if applies – it may be University, College etc. or company where they work) along with:
- the copy of last achieved diploma or Transcript of Records from recent studies
- language certificate
- health certificate
Application procedure lasts at least 3 weeks and all applicants are informed on its result (acceptance or refusal).

How can I register for courses?

 

In order to register to full-time programs, please contact the unit concerned. If you wish to register for selected courses at one or various faculties you should first contact your program coordinator at the International Relations Office (IRO). Registration form depends on your status at the University of Warsaw and also on the units’ requirements, For more courses you have to register  on-line, for others through an official letter from IRO or at the professor during the first class. For further instruction ask at the IRO.

What is the structure of the academic year?

 

The academic year divides into two semesters - winter (October-January) and summer (February-June). They are followed by summer holidays and by September make-up exams' period. For exact classes and holiday dates please look at the calendar.
